ABOUT IELTS

The International English Language Testing System is a globally accepted test to measure the English communication abilities of applicants. It tests applicants on the following four parameters:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

There are two types of IELTS tests. Applicants must choose their test based on their immediate purpose for applying.

IELTS ACADEMIC

This test is for students seeking admission in universities abroad at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, and for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in an environment where English language is used, and reflects some of the features used in academic study.

IELTS GENERAL TRAINING TEST

This test is primarily for professionals and migrants aspiring to permanently settle in an English speaking country. The test is designed to assess how comfortable the applicants are with using English in everyday scenarios. A good score is essential if you want to increase your chances of settling in countries like the UK, Canada & Australia.

FAQ

The registration fee for the IELTS exam in India is Rs.14,000.

IELTS can be taken as many times as one pleases. There is no limit to the number of IELTS tests that one can take. However, you will need to pay the test fees for each attempt that you take.

The good score in IELTS exam depends on the purpose of writing the test.

IELTS is generally taken for immigration or to study overseas.

If you have taken the IELTS test for immigration, then a good score depends on the country and the visa category that you have applied for.

For example, if you are applying for an Australian PR, you need to score at least a 6 on each module (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) to be eligible. However, a 6 on each module does not earn you any points for English proficiency. A score of 7 on each module gets you 10 points while a score of 8 on each module gets you 20 points which are the maximum.

If you are applying for studying overseas, then you should get a score as per the country and the University that you are applying for. Most Universities abroad require you to have an overall score of 6 or 6.5 to be eligible to apply.

The Reading and Writing sections are for 60 minutes each. The Speaking test takes about 11 to 14 minutes and is conducted like an interview by an examiner who assesses candidates on fluency, coherence, grammar, accuracy, and pronunciation. The examiner generally conducts the Speaking test in 3 parts and records the entire conversation.

For taking the IELTS exam, your minimum age should be atleast 16 years and you must have a valid passport.

Getting a good score in the IELTS exam depends on the purpose of taking it. Suppose you are taking the test for immigration, then a good score depends on the country or visa category you have applied for. For instance, if you are applying for a PR in Australia you must score at least 6 bands in each module to be eligible to apply. Based on the score you get your points in your application. A score of 7 gives you only 10 points while a score of 8 on each module gets you 20 points.

If you have given the IELTS exam to study for a course overseas, then you should get a score that is acceptable to the country or university you are applying for. Most universities require a minimum score of 6 to 6.5 for eligibility to apply for a course.

Some general tips to get a good score are:

  • Start your preparation early, be consistent, and monitor your progress frequently.
  • Practice using your English skills in four ways-listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Take every opportunity to communicate in English, orally and in writing.
  • Take guidance from a professional instructor and also seek feedback on your areas of improvement.
  • Towards the end of your IELTS preparation, start practicing with full-length tests under realistic condition for several weeks before the test date.

There is no passing score for IELTS.

People often tend to say that they have “failed” the IELTS test if they do not get the desired score. However, there is no passing or failing in IELTS. Your required score depends on the purpose (immigration, study overseas etc.), country and the visa category that you are applying for.

Writing Task 2, Listening, and Speaking are the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS general.

The only difference between the two tests is Writing Task 1 in IELTS Academic.

Most experts believe that attending the common classes of IELTS & General helps in understanding the difference between both the modules and this will help the test taker to prepare effectively to achieve the higher Band.

IELTS-General is accepted for PR or Immigration, whereas IELTS-Academic is accepted for Study abroad. Talk to our Immigration or Study abroad consultants for proper guidance of appearing for General or Academics.
