Individuals travelling overseas on emigration can draw maximum foreign exchange of USD 1000,000. This is on basis of self-declaration from an endorsed dealer in India. The amount is only to be used for meeting the incidental expenditures in the nation of emigration.
The RBI laws specify the foreign exchange that can be carried for overseas visits for purposes such as tourism etc. The amount is $10,000 in any one fiscal year that can be received from an approved dealer on basis of self-declaration. Foreign exchange coins/notes up to $3,000 are now permitted for travelers.
Majority of the banks will offer the exchange of foreign currency if you have a savings or checking account with them. A bank will exchange currency if you have a credit card with it in some cases.
You can buy Forex with a Credit Card, in the same manner; you would do with a Debit Card. The only thing you need to do is to inform the Forex people that you are making the payment by your Credit Card. Transaction charges will, however, be applicable.
The Act of Foreign Exchange Management, 2000, specifies that the unused foreign exchange must be returned within 6 months of return from overseas. Nevertheless, if you want, you can keep the foreign exchange of maximum USD 2,000 in your Domestic Resident Foreign Currency Accounts.
